Description
The five pieces which make up this unfinished opéra-comique of 1843 were found by Opera Rara’s founders at the Sterling Library of London University. This recording includes all five pieces by Donizetti for the very first time plus arias from Gianni di Parigi, Il diluvio universale, Dom Sébastien and Imelda de’ Lambertazzi. James Judd and the Philharmonia Orchestra are joined by Margreta Elkins, Alexander Oliver and Christian du Plessis.

This recording came to fruition after the exciting discovery of the authentic rewriting of the opera in Donizetti’s own hand discovered by Don White and Patric Schmid in the Sterling Library of London University. Don White contributes an excellent note in the well-produced booklet.

Was there ever a more prolific composer of 19th-century opera than Donizetti? Yes, Pacini; but then he lived longer and his capacity for self-renewal was far more limited. Donizetti’s never flagged, least of all in his final works written for Paris and Vienna.
