Throughout nineteenth-century Europe, one of the most important institutions of social and artistic life was the salon. Here Opera Rara presents the music enjoyed by Europeans at home nearly two hundred years ago. Continuing the series of music written for the salon, we travel to France for a fascinating glimpse of one of the great figures of 19th-century music: Pauline Viardot. Her delicate drawing-room version of Cinderella, written in 1904, is tinged with the colour and nuance found in the work of Debussy and Satie.
